Most people who call a private investigator have never done it before. They've spent days, sometimes weeks, building up the courage to make the call. By the time they dial, they're often anxious, unsure what to say, and worried about what they'll find out.
I want to remove every bit of uncertainty from that moment.
Here's exactly what happens when you call Watson PI at 512-801-9754.
The First 60 Seconds
I answer. Not a receptionist, not a voicemail system, me, David Watson. If I'm in the field and can't pick up, I call back within two hours. Always.
You don't need a prepared speech. You don't need to know what kind of investigation you need. You can start with: "I have a situation and I'm not sure if I need a PI." That's enough.
What I'll Ask You
The first call is a listening session. I'll ask a few basic questions:
- What's going on? (Tell me as much or as little as you're comfortable with.)
- What are you hoping to find out or accomplish?
- Is there a timeline or deadline, a court date, a custody hearing, a business decision?
- What have you already done, if anything?
I won't push you for details you're not ready to share. I won't judge your situation. After 34 years of investigations covering every conceivable scenario, I've heard it all and I'm not here to evaluate your choices. I'm here to get you answers.
What I'll Tell You
After I understand your situation, I'll tell you:
Whether a private investigator can actually help. If your situation isn't one where investigation will produce useful results, I'll tell you that directly rather than take your money. This happens more than people expect. Some situations are better resolved through attorneys, counselors, or direct conversation. I'll point you toward the right resource.
What type of investigation fits your situation. Surveillance, background check, missing persons, digital investigation, asset search, different situations call for different approaches. I'll explain what I'd recommend and why.
What it will cost and how long it will take. I don't give vague estimates. I give you a clear picture of the likely scope, the realistic timeline, and the cost range based on what you've described. If you want to proceed, we sign a straightforward engagement agreement that specifies exactly what I'm doing and what you're paying.
Confidentiality
Everything you share on that first call is confidential. I am not an attorney, so I can't offer attorney-client privilege, but I operate under strict professional confidentiality. I will not share the fact that you called, what you told me, or anything about your case with anyone outside of what's legally required.
For clients who are concerned about privacy, particularly in divorce, infidelity, or custody situations, I'll walk you through how we communicate throughout the investigation in a way that protects your privacy at every step. Read more about PI confidentiality and what to expect when hiring a PI.
What Happens After the Call
If you decide to move forward:
- We sign an engagement agreement, a clear, plain-language document outlining the scope, terms, and cost.
- I begin the investigation, typically within 24 to 48 hours depending on the case type.
- I provide updates at agreed intervals throughout the investigation.
- I deliver a professional written report with all documentation, photographs, video, records, observations, organized and formatted for whatever use you need it for: personal knowledge, attorney review, or court proceedings.
The Most Common Thing I Hear After That First Call
"I wish I had called sooner."
Not because they waited on results, but because the call itself removed weeks of uncertainty. They knew what was possible, what it would cost, and what their options were. That clarity alone was worth the conversation.
If you're on the fence, call. There's no obligation and it costs nothing. 512-801-9754.
