Online romance fraud cost Americans over $1.3 billion in 2023, more than any other consumer fraud category tracked by the FTC. Texas consistently ranks in the top five states for reported cases.
The people who fall victim aren't naive. They're educated, experienced adults who encountered someone who was very good at this. The warning signs are often subtle at first. By the time the flags become obvious, emotional investment has already clouded judgment.
Here are the ten patterns I most commonly see in cases that come to my office.
1. They Can Never Video Chat
Always an excuse, bad connection, broken camera, working late, camera shy. This is the most reliable early indicator of a catfish situation. A real person who is genuinely interested in you will video call.
One video chat proves very little, images and even real-time video can be manipulated. But persistent refusal to video chat is a firm red flag.
2. They Escalate Emotionally Very Fast
Within days or a week, they're using language that feels like a months-long relationship. "I've never felt this way about anyone." "I think you might be the one." This isn't passion, it's a manipulation technique called "love bombing" designed to accelerate emotional attachment before rational evaluation kicks in.
3. Their Story Has Gaps or Inconsistencies
Ask the same background questions at different points in the conversation. Where did they grow up? Where did they go to school? What do they do for work? Genuine people give consistent answers. Constructed identities develop cracks under repeated questioning.
4. They Claim to Be Working Overseas or in a Profession That Explains Their Absence
Military deployment, oil rig contracts, international medical missions, offshore engineering projects, these are the most common cover stories because they explain why they can't meet you, why they need financial help, and why their life is otherwise somewhat inaccessible.
5. The Photos Look Too Good or Feel Generic
Reverse image search every photo they send you. Google Lens and TinEye are free and take 30 seconds. If the photos appear on other profiles or stock photo sites, you have your answer. If they look like model-quality professional shots with no candid or everyday photos mixed in, that's suspicious.
6. They Ask for Money. Ever
The endgame of most romance fraud is a financial request. It starts small: a temporary emergency, a plane ticket to come visit you, a customs fee to release a shipment. Every payment makes the next one easier to justify.
A legitimate romantic interest will never ask you for money before meeting in person. Full stop.
7. They Won't Tell You Exactly Where They Live
"I live in Houston" but can't name their neighborhood. "I'm from Dallas" but doesn't know the street names. Vague geographic answers often mean the person is overseas running a fraud operation and has a script about American cities.
8. They Have a Very Limited Online Footprint
Most adults in 2026 have some kind of digital trail. LinkedIn, Facebook, an old high school directory listing, their employer's website. If you search this person's name, employer, school, and city and find absolutely nothing, the profile may have been recently created for fraudulent purposes.
9. They Push You Off the Dating Platform Quickly
Dating platforms monitor for fraud patterns and can flag or remove suspicious accounts. Getting you to communicate exclusively via WhatsApp, Telegram, or personal email removes that protection and makes the interaction harder to document or report.
10. Your Gut Is Telling You Something Is Wrong
This isn't a red flag from a checklist, it's the most reliable signal of all. If something feels rehearsed, if the pace feels engineered, if their responses seem slightly off from what a person in their claimed situation would actually say, trust that feeling. The cost of being wrong is another conversation. The cost of ignoring it can be devastating.
What a Professional Background Check Reveals
A professional PI background check goes far beyond what you can find on Google. We can verify: real name and identity, current and previous addresses, criminal history in Texas and other states, civil court records, marriage and divorce records, business registrations, and financial red flags.
If the person you've been talking to is who they say they are, the check takes an hour and gives you peace of mind. If they're not, we find out before you've invested any more time, emotion, or money. Learn more about background check laws in Texas and how to find a legitimate PI in Texas.
