Personal Letter From Dave Watson:
My career in law enforcement has taken me through various roles, ranging from patrol officer to undercover investigator. After graduating from the Los Angeles Police Academy, I began my service in uniform patrol, where I later took on the role of Training Officer across multiple divisions within the city. In this position, I trained new recruits in investigative techniques, court preparation, and other essential law enforcement skills.
I also had the privilege of working in vice undercover investigations, where my duties involved responding to citizen complaints and launching investigations. These often required extensive surveillance, with evidence gathered through photographs and video. Once arrests were made, I worked closely with the District Attorney to ensure the proper filing of cases.
One of my key assignments was with the Metro Division, an elite unit within the LAPD. This division provides dignitary protection for heads of state and other VIPs and plays a significant role in crime suppression in areas experiencing rising crime rates. The officers in this unit receive additional training in investigations, self-defense, firearms, and crowd control. The Metro Division is also responsible for serving felony warrants across the city.
After six years with the LAPD, I earned a promotion to Sergeant. My first post in this role was overseeing a patrol shift, ensuring that investigations were carried out and documented appropriately.
Following my patrol duties, I was appointed to lead a vice undercover unit. I managed all aspects of undercover operations, ensuring that each investigation was conducted safely and professionally. I was also responsible for reviewing officers’ backgrounds to determine their suitability for undercover assignments, approving arrest reports, and overseeing the proper filing of cases with the District Attorney.
Later, I joined the Internal Affairs Division, where I served as an Advocate for the Department. In this role, I managed administrative processes for serious allegations of police misconduct. My responsibilities included conducting board hearings, gathering and presenting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and preparing and questioning them during hearings. I also submitted final reports to the Chief of Police.
In another role, I assisted a Division Captain in overseeing daily operations. My duties included conducting background checks on officers for undercover assignments and finalizing investigations into personnel complaints.
Next, I joined the Management Services Division, where I conducted specialized research investigations for the Chief of Police, often finding information that wasn’t easily accessible.
Later, I was assigned to assist a Commander in the Criminal Intelligence Group, a specialized division within the LAPD. This unit comprises the Anti-Terrorist, Organized Crime, Vice, and Narcotics Divisions—each highly confidential.
After retiring from the LAPD, I founded Watson PI Services INC. Inc., where I have handled numerous civil and criminal investigations. Whether you’re dealing with a criminal matter or a civil dispute, my team and I are here to help. I can provide references upon request.
Thank you for considering Watson PI Services INC.
